Benefits
HUP Exponents is a free app that serves as a resource for teachers providing instruction on exponents and for students who want to learn more about the topic. Each of the 11 lessons contains instructional content and a link to a video tutorial that provides further information about exponents. The sections have a limited number of practice problems for students to complete after they review the instructional material. They receive immediate feedback with regards to their answers and if they feel they need more information they can return and review to the instructional lesson. Students may work through this module independently or under the teacher's guidance. In short, this app provides a comprehensive overview of the exponents rules covered in the Common Core pre-algebra curriculum.
Constraints
HUP Exponents is limited to the 11 lessons incorporated into the app. In addition, it only has two self-assessment exercises at the conclusion of the lesson--not enough to determine if the student has mastered the material covered in the lesson. Interactive elements in this app are fairly limited so students seeking more engaging elements will be disappointed by Algebra Champ. There are no built-in calculators or whiteboards for student use.
Ideas for Use
Teachers will app useful as a a resource for students struggling to master the nuances of exponents. In addition, students may review the material as a pre-lesson or post-lesson, however, students may find it difficult to use HUP Exponents as the sole instructional resource. HUP Exponents is correlated to CCSS Math Content 8.EE.A.1 "Know and apply the properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent numerical expressions" and CCSS.Math.Content.HSA-SSE.B.3c "Use the properties of exponents to transform expressions for exponential functions."
